New Orleans / Mississippi River

Notices

The saltwater wedge continues its progression up the river.  As of yesterday, the top of the wedge was estimated to be at Mile 49.2 AHP.  Construction of the saltwater barrier to 55 feet below the waterline is ongoing and the only restriction to navigation remains one way traffic through the construction site.

The contractor estimates construction to be completed late next week.  Once completed the Corps will monitor salinity levels to determine if additional height is needed.  If additional height is required, there will be a notch, similar to last year, to allow deep draft traffic to pass through the barrier. Please note that if the additional height is needed, there will probably be two river closures at Mile 63.4, lasting twelve hours each, to allow for construction without having to move equipment for the passage of traffic.  As stated above, there will not be a decision of additional height until construction to 55 feet below the waterline is completed and salinity levels are monitored.
