The Captain of the Port, Sector Maryland/NCR has set Ice Condition Two for the approaches to the C&D Canal and the waters of the District of Columbia. Ice Condition One remains in effect in the following safety zones, identified in Title 33, Code of Federal Regulations, Part 165.550, Upper Chesapeake Bay from the William Preston Lane Jr. Bridge to the approaches of the C&D Canal and the Potomac River south of Woodrow Wilson Bridge (Zones 2 and 5).
The following restrictions are in effect, only steel hull vessels are allowed to enter, operate in, or transit zones two and five. In zones one and six, an additional requirement of a minimum of 1500 horsepower is in effect.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers prescribes steel hull, 3600 minimum shaft horsepower, and bow thruster capability restrictions for the C&D Canal. The canal dispatcher on duty should be contacted regarding conditions and requirements for vessels using the C&D Canal at (410) 885-5580.
Mariners can report ice conditions to the Sector Maryland/NCR Command Center on VHF radio channel 16 or call (410) 576-2693.
