Port Alert

Port of Houston, TX

October 28, 2025

Notices

A line of thunderstorms has developed ahead of the anticipated front and are predicted to impact the Houston-Galveston area within the next 30 minutes. A second main line of thunderstorms associated with the front are expected to reach the Upper Houston Ship Channel around 1800. Some of these storms could be severe with hail and or tornadoes.

The NWS has issued a Gale Warning that remains in effect from 1900 this evening through 0100 Thursday.  Frequent gusts of 35–40 knots are expected during this period, with occasional gusts reaching up to 45 knots possible.

Portions of the Houston Ship Channel and Galveston Bay could experience periods of sustained gale-force winds tonight, particularly between 2200 and 0300.  Due to the nature of the storms and the front, vessels entering the channel may initially encounter lighter winds near the entrance before encountering stronger winds within the lower bay

Mariners are advised to consider these weather conditions before beginning or continuing their transits.  All vessels and facilities are encouraged to take preventive measures in advance of the front. Such measures may include the following:
  • Safety measures should be taken to secure missile hazards, nonessential equipment, and loose gear.
  • Ensure vessel moorings are adequate for the predicted winds. Mooring lines ready to be doubled up with due consideration given effects of the front.
  • Vessels in the Bolivar Roads Anchorage should ensure that anchor and anchoring equipment is in good working condition and standby to immediately respond to anchor dragging events.
  • Continue to Monitor the National Weather Service and VTS Houston-Galveston frequencies for up-to-date forecasts.
Very respectfully,
Vessel Traffic Service
