Bulk Carrier Explosion - Baltimore - 8/18/2025
Vessel – MV Sapphire / 751-foot merchant vessel W-Sapphire in Baltimore 
Currently known:
1)           1830/18th - Explosion on board vessel while in transit on Patapsco River main channel.
2)           Hold #2 claimed to take on water.
3)           Port closed, up to key bridge, only transit from C&D Canal to anchorage permitted until the hatch cover is located.
4)           Vessel currently anchored north of Bay Bridge at anchorage.
5)           No injuries have been reported at this time, and the cause of the explosion is under investigation.
6)           The Coast Guard has established a 2,000-yard safety zone around the incident location, spanning from the Key Bridge to Brewerton Angle Channel LB “14”.
7)           Reports state the fire has been extinguished and plans for the vessel are being formulated.
a)           At approximately 6:30 p.m., Sector Maryland - National Capital Region watchstanders received a call over VHF channel 16 from the W-Sapphire sating their had been an explosion aboard the vessel. The W-Sapphire was outbound from Baltimore Harbor with 23 crewmembers and 2 pilots aboard and was south of Fort Carroll at the time of the explosion. The report stated the vessel was transporting coal.

* WHERE...Coastal waters from Cape May NJ to Cape Henlopen DE
  out 20 nm and Coastal waters from Cape Henlopen to Fenwick
  Island DE out 20 nm.
* WHEN...Until 6 PM EDT Friday.
* IMPACTS...Conditions will be hazardous to small craft.
PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...
Inexperienced mariners, especially those operating smaller
vessels, should avoid navigating in hazardous conditions.

High pressure sets up to the north while a boundary stalls out to
the south. A trough moves in during the middle of the week as
Hurricane Erin passes offshore. As Hurricane Erin moves away, high
pressure moves in for the end of the week and into the weekend
before a frontal system moves in for the back half of the
weekend.
