NEWS ARTICLES:  Project Design Agreement signed for Tampa Harbor Federal Deep Draft Navigation Project - Sep 16 2025 - Another significant milestone checked off on the Tampa Harbor Federal Deep Draft Navigation Project as the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Tampa Port Authority signed the Design Agreement authorizing the start of Preconstruction Engineering and Design (PED) this morning during a ceremony held at the Port of Tampa Bay. The joint signing of this agreement will allow the design of the project to move forward.

“Reaching the design phase marks a major milestone for this project,” said Milan Mora, Chief, Water Resources Branch. “This step brings us closer to construction of a vital effort that will reduce transportation costs, enhance safety and reliability, and strengthen our supply and transportation systems. The project also keeps investments local, supporting jobs and businesses in the community. We value the strong collaboration with Port Tampa Bay and look forward to advancing this important work together.”

The Tampa Harbor Federal Deep Draft Navigation Project includes roughly 70 miles of channels from the Gulf of Mexico entrance at the Egmont Bar north to the City of Tampa, including the Hillsborough Channel, Alafia River, and the Upper Channels. The main stem channel leading into the Tampa Bay port system is approximately 42 miles long, 500 feet wide, and 43 feet deep.

This deep draft navigation project’s objective is to lower transportation costs, to provide safe, reliable, efficient and environmentally sustainable waterborne transportation systems and to support habitat creation and increase recreational opportunities through maximizing the beneficial use of dredged material.

"The deepening of Port Tampa Bay's shipping channels will bring prosperity, jobs and a positive economic impact to our region, all while having a limited environmental impact. A deeper shipping channel helps to strengthen the domestic supply chain and increases our global competitiveness. This is a moment of celebration for the port, our maritime community and partners and Tampa Bay as a whole," explained Paul Anderson, President & CEO of Port Tampa Bay.

Additionally, this will be a landmark project for beneficial use of dredged material. Substantial efforts made during the feasibility identified numerous placement opportunities for the dredged material to maximize the benefits of the project beyond the traditional navigation benefits provided by the improved channel.

The project, authorized under Section 1401 (1) of the Water Resources Development Act of 2024 will be cost shared with the Tampa Port Authority.
